A new poll by CNN, whose editorial commentary largely supports President Obama and his policies, delivered some bad news on his apparent birthday today: 6 of 10 people are uncertain the president was even born in the United States.

The poll was taken July 16-21 of 1,018 adults, including 335 Democrats and 285 Republicans. It has a margin of error of 3 percentage points.

The question was: “Do you think Barack Obama was definitely born in the United States, probably born in the United States, probably born in another country, or definitely born in another country?”

Definitely in the United States got the vote from 42 percent of the respondents and probably in the United States another 29 percent.

But that leaves almost six of 10 Americans uncertain about the president’s birth – and therefore his eligibility under the U.S. Constitution to be president.

Sixteen percent said Obama probably was born in another nation, and 11 percent said he definitely was born somewhere other than the U.S.

Breaking it down, 64 percent of Democrats believe he definitely was born in the U.S., leaving more than one in three Democrats not sure. For independents, 37 percent believe he definitely was born in the U.S., leaving some two in three unsure. For members of the GOP, not even one in four (23 percent) believes Obama definitely was born in the U.S.

Fully 41 percent of the GOP believe he definitely or probably was born outside the United States. That’s nearly 30 percent for independents.

“It’s surely not what the leader of the free world wants for his birthday. But, for a stubborn group of Americans, conspiracy theories about President Obama’s birthplace are the gifts that keep on giving,” CNN said.

“Not surprisingly, there are big partisan differences, although a majority of Republicans thinks Obama was definitely or probably born here,” CNN Polling Director Keating Holland said in the CNN report.

CNN reported that “Hawaii has released a copy of the president’s birth certificate – officially called a ‘certificate of live birth.’ And in 1961 the hospital where the president was born placed announcements in two Hawaiian newspapers regarding Obama’s birth.”

However, the online image released by the Obama campaign during his presidential race actually is called a “Certification of Live Birth,” and those documents under the rules in the state of Hawaii were available for children not born in the state.

Also, the newspaper notifications were published based on information provided by the state that would have been generated automatically had anyone at that time decided that a United States citizenship was preferable to that of another country and stated that the child was born in Hawaii.

On the CNN forum page, participants suggested many reasons for people to doubt Obama’s birth.

“Some poeple (sic) have way too much time on their hands,, (sic) this is a lost cause indicative of terrified Republicans who know they’re going to be on the political sidelines for the next decade,” said one.

“That’s about in line with the percentage of racists in America. The racists will always contend that he is not qualified to be president becasue (sic) he is not a citizen. What a joke,” wrote another.

“Wow, the level of ignorance prevelant (sic) in this country is simply staggering,” added a third.

WND previously reported when a new “60 Minutes”–Vanity Fair poll revealed that only 39 percent of respondents believe Obama was born in Hawaii as he wrote in his book.

The magazine boasted, “A whopping 63 percent – very nearly two-thirds of us – went out on a limb and stated for the record that we believe in the United States. It’s enough to make you proud to be an American – or 63 percent proud, at any rate.”

But that included those who say they believe he was born in Kansas or another state, which still would conflict with Obama’s narrative.

It was only a month earlier when a WND/Wenzel Poll revealed 55 percent – or almost that same 61 percent of Americans who don’t believe Obama’s Hawaii birth story – want him to release all records relating to his childhood and his education, including college records, Harvard Law School papers, passport records, travel records and other similar documentation.

Questions about Obama’s eligibility to be president, exacerbated by his refusal to answer questions and release ordinary background documentation and his extraordinary legal maneuvers to keep his background hidden, have been on the radar of a number of top-level investigative reporters and news organizations since before his election.

Essentially, while the Constitution requires a president to be a “natural born citizen,” which is not the same as a “citizen,” none of the questions about Obama’s qualifications – or lack thereof – under that requirement have yet been answered.

At the time Fritz Wenzel of Wenzel Strategies said, “Simply put, this question about Obama’s legitimacy as president is undermining everything he does in the minds of millions of Americans.”

“Asked what should be done should it be found that Obama does not meet the qualifications to be president, 59 percent said he should be removed from office, and 35 percent said all bills signed into law by Obama should be repealed,” Wenzel said.

The WND/Wenzel poll said when asked about whether Obama’s background documentation – the school records, birth records and others – should be released, the 55 percent who said yes included more than 82 percent of the GOP, 55 percent of independents and nearly 28 percent of Democrats.

Further, another 17.1 percent of Americans said Obama should release some of his documentation, making it nearly three in four Americans who want the president to unlock the steel door on some or all of his background information.

Despite his campaign promises of transparency while in office, there has been no shortage of disputes over secrecy in the Obama administration. He’s already argued in court for more secrecy in the White House, claimed his work is “privileged” and apparently got rid of an inspector general who was applying heat to a friend.

The WND/Wenzel poll revealed 52 percent of Americans believe Obama is hiding something and 39 percent suspect he was not born in the U.S., frustrating efforts of the Obama administration to paint so-called “birthers” as a right-wing fringe.

“Even among Democrats, nearly one in four – 22 percent – said they either suspect he was not born in the U.S. or … are not sure on the question,” Wenzel reported.

Last October, a poll revealed three in 10 Americans believe Obama is a “foreigner,” and more than a year ago, a poll revealed the ranks of the so-called “birthers” growing.

The Prime Minister of Russia Vladimir Putin took second place in the ranking of the most influential politicians, compiled on the basis of Internet survey of six thousand people in the UK, Italy, France, Germany, Spain and the U.S. service Harris Interactive, says RFI. Topping the list is the U.S. president Barack Obama.

American president included among influential politicians 82 percent of those surveyed, the name of Vladimir Putin called the 63 per cent, Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel is behind the Russian prime minister by one percentage point, while French President Nicolas Sarkozy was in fourth place - it recalled 57 percent of the respondents. It clarifies the AFP, fifth place went to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

According to the survey, Obama also became the most popular politician of the world - his support of 77 percent of respondents. In second place was the Dalai Lama with the support of three-fourths of the respondents, the third line is U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton received the support of 58 percent, and in fourth place with 47 percent of Merkel.

As the newspaper notes, the list of most popular politicians, Vladimir Putin was only 13th place. The least popular political figures of respondents recognized the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, as well as Chinese President Hu Jintao.

Baucus has acknowledged that he recommended his girlfriend, Melodee Hanes, to be the U.S. attorney for Montana, but it has not been previously known whether he or his staff told Justice Department officials about the relationship at the time of his recommendation. An official involved in the vetting of U.S. attorneys says that Baucus did not—a disclosure that is almost certainly going to  escalate questions about Baucus’ conduct.

Baucus, the Democratic chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, submitted Hanes’ name and that of two other Montana attorneys to be U.S. attorney for his state. Senators traditionally nominate three people to the White House, which then considers one or all of them for final appointment.

That Baucus first recommended Hanes for the job was first reported by the website, MainJustice.com.

Hanes herself recommended that her name be withdrawn from consideration, mitigating allegations of favoritism by Baucus. But it is believed that Baucus and Hanes were already involved in a personal relationship when Baucus recommended her.

Hanes also was a well qualified prosecutor at the time Baucus recommended her, also lessening the charge of favoritism in recommending her.

And Baucus has said that he and Hanes were separated from their respective spouses at the time the relationship between the two of them began. Now divorced, Baucus and Hanes now live together on Capitol Hill.

Despite this, however, Justice Department officials say they were blindsided when they learned of the relationship between the Senator and the woman he recommended to be U.S. attorney. Officials also say that the Senator’s non-disclosure might have tainted the selection process.

The Obama Justice Department, citing the politicization of the Department during the Bush administration—most notably the firings of nine U.S. attorneys by Bush for political reasons—has vowed to bring integrity back to the selection and hiring of U.S. Attorneys and other political appointees. They have appointed more career prosecutors to be U.S. attorneys than previous administrations.   And Obama reappointed one U.S. attorney fired by the Bush administration, Dan Bogden, back to his old position as U.S. attorney for Nevada.

The possibility that they might have appointed a U.S. attorney that was a Senator’s girlfriend—could have turned out to have been not only a major political embarrassment but also a potential scandal.

But Department officials are not likely to criticize Baucus publicly. And Hanes has since gotten a job with the Justice Department working on juvenile justice issues. A Justice Department spokesman told the New York Times that she obtained the job independent and because she was highly qualified. Tracy Schmaler, the Justice Department spokeswoman, told the Times that Ms. Hanes was hired “because of her decades of experience in the field,” saying she had specialized in the prosecution of child abuse and neglect at the Polk County Attorney’s Office in Des Moines.

“She has won awards for her work, been published on the topics of child abuse and fatality, and taught classes in these areas to both law students and Department of Human Services child protection investigators,” Shmaler said.

Most of the Iranian capital’s Internet links with the outside world were down on Saturday, two days ahead of planned demonstrations by opponents of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Sources close to Iran’s technical services told AFP the cut was the result of “a decision by the authorities” rather than a technical breakdown, but telecommunications ministry officials were unavailable for comment.

Officials furthermore revoked all foreign media permits, in an attempt to block any reports coming out of Tehran between Dec. 7 and Dec. 9.

“Police and elite Revolutionary Guards have warned that any ‘illegal’ rally will be fiercely confronted on Monday when the country marks Student Day, commemorating the killing of three students in 1953 under the former Shah,” reported Reuters.

Internet lines, texting and at times even mobile phone connections have often been cut or scrambled since Ahmadinejad’s contested re-election in June, but this was the first such occurrence a full two days before planned protests.

Iranian opposition groups are preparing to hold fresh demonstrations on Monday, several websites reported, as the nation marks the annual Students Day.

The elite Revolutionary Guards and other authorities have warned they will crack down on any attempt by regime opponents to hijack the event to mount further protests against Ahmadinejad.

Tehran on December 7 marks the 1953 killing by the shah’s security forces of three students, just months after a US-backed coup toppled popular prime minister Mohammad Mossadeq.

The New York Post is reporting that Billy Joel’s daughter with Christie Brinkley, 23-year-old musician Alexa Ray Joel, was taken to the emergency room in NYC on Saturday after a failed suicide attempt.

The paper says Alexa Ray ingested a large number of sleeping pills and was rushed to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Manhattan.

A female caller told a 911 operator that Joel had taken several pills and wanted to die, sources said.

“Alexa is stable. Her doctors are assessing her needs and that’s all we can say at this moment,” said Claire Mercuri, Alexa’s and Billy’s personal publicist.

Joel was conscious at St. Vincent’s Hospital, and is expected to survive, said other sources.

Thankfully!

By proposing an amendment that would require members of Congress to register for public health care if the so-called public option were to pass, the two Republicans hoped to further deter their colleagues from voting in favor.

The hitch in their plan: several Democrats took them seriously.

Speaking to MSNBC on Friday night, Sen. Sherrod Brown explained why he offered to co-sponsor the amendment.

“[With] Sen. Coburn, nine times we said we wanted to co-sponsor,” he said. “Usually it takes once and they say yes. I’ve always accepted that; so has everybody I know in the Senate. Nine times we asked to co-sponsor and their office either just said we’ll get back to you or ignored our calls and our emails because it was all a sham. … They clearly don’t like the public option. They were making fun of it. Their whole game is to delay and deceive and to play political games. … And so, it’s just a little partisan game they’re playing.”

So far, Senators Dodd, Mikulski and Franken have also added their names as co-sponsors.

Half of millions — including some 8 million automated, web-based requests for GPS location, all in just over a year’s time.

The revelation was made by Indiana University grad Christopher Soghoian, as part of his PhD dissertation published Dec. 1, 2009.

He attributes the stunning number to Paul Taylor, an Electronic Surveillance Manager with Sprint Nextel, who was speaking recently at the Washington, D.C. International Securities Systems conference, otherwise known as ISS World.

“Looking around at the name badges pinned to the suits milling around the refreshment area, it really was a who’s who of the spies and those who enable their spying,” he wrote. “Household name telecom companies and equipment vendors, US government agencies (both law enforcement and intel). Also present were representatives from foreign governments — Columbia, Mexico, Algeria, and Nigeria, who, like many of the US government employees, spent quite a bit of time at the vendor booths, picking up free pens and coffee mugs while they learned about the latest and greatest surveillance products currently on the market.”

According to Soghoian, it was during the telecom service providers roundtable discussion that Taylor dropped the bombs.

“[M]y major concern is the volume of requests. We have a lot of things that are automated but that’s just scratching the surface,” he said in an audio recording that has since been removed due to alleged copyright violation. “One of the things, like with our GPS tool. We turned it on the web interface for law enforcement about one year ago last month, and we just passed 8 million requests. So there is no way on earth my team could have handled 8 million requests from law enforcement, just for GPS alone. So the tool has just really caught on fire with law enforcement.”

“He’s talking about the wonderful automated backend Sprint runs for law enforcement, LSite, which allows investigators to rapidly retrieve information directly, without the burden of having to get a human being to respond to every specific request for data,” added Julian Sanchez at the Cato Institute. “Rather, says Sprint, each of those 8 million requests represents a time when an FBI computer or agent pulled up a target’s location data using their portal or API. (I don’t think you can Tweet subpoenas yet.) For an investigation whose targets are under ongoing realtime surveillance over a period of weeks or months, that could very well add up to hundreds or thousands of requests for a few individuals. So those 8 million data requests, according to a Sprint representative in the comments, actually ‘only’ represent ’several thousand’ discrete cases.”

Taylor continued: “Two or three years ago, we probably had less than 10% of our requests including text messaging. Now, over half of all of our surveillance includes SMS messaging.”

He added that his team, which handles all of Sprint’s police requests, is 110 people strong.

“It’s useful to keep in mind that, as Sprint spokesman Matt Sullivan [said], ‘every wireless carrier has a team and a system’ through which police can access GPS data,” noted a follow-up report by Talking Points Memo. “Sprint is the company unlucky enough to find itself the focus of scrutiny, but it reportedly controls just 18% of the U.S. wireless market, making it the third largest carrier.”

GPS location “likely outnumber[s] all other forms of surveillance request,” Soghoian added.

Sprint has over 47 million customers in the U.S.

Most of them wore scarves, T-shirts or sweaters in various shades of violet after the group of bloggers who organized the protest chose it as the only colour not used by political parties.

The organizers claimed to have attracted 350,000 supporters from a wide spectrum of society, backed by mainly left-wing opposition parties.

Banners carried by the marchers calling on Berlusconi to quit referred to the prime minister’s various legal problems, including suspicions of corruption and tax fraud.

Antonio di Pietro, a former anti-corruption judge and now leader of the Italy of Values party, denounced “the Berlusconi government’s great electoral, political, judicial and media swindle”.

Participants ranged from film director Nanni Moretti, who condemned Berlusconi’s domination of Italian television, to ecologists opposed to a planned bridge across the Straits of Messina and immigrant defense groups.

Protesters shouted “mafioso” at effigies of the billionaire prime minister, referring to a Mafia hitman who testified at a trial in Turin that his boss alleged Berlusconi had aided organized crime.

Berlusconi has vehemently denied ties to the Mafia.

We didn’t think it was possible, but even more details about Tiger Woods‘ accident have been revealed!

Neighbor Jarius Adams informed Florida police that Tiger was splayed out in the street “snoring” after he crashed his car into a fire hydrant last week.

Adams’ sister was awoken by the noise of a “faint, continuous knocking sound for about 10 or 15 minutes,” and told her brother to check out the scene while she called 911.

Jarius headed outside, where he saw Tiger in the street and rushed over to help him: “I was holding him still at one point and I didn’t get any blood on me whatsoever,” said Adams.

The US labor market witnessed a dramatic improvement in November as the number of jobs lost narrowed to 11,000 and the unemployment rate dipped to 10.0 percent, official data showed Friday.

The Labor Department figures showed the labor market nearing positive territory, suggesting the economy is approaching job growth needed to sustain a fragile recovery.

The report was far better than analyst expectations for a loss of 125,000 jobs and a jobless rate unchanged from October at 10.2 percent.

Obama welcomed the data, saying they “reflected a continuing positive trend” of diminishing job loss. But he insisted much more needed to be done to provide Americans with stable, well-paying employment.

“For those who were laid off last month and the millions of Americans who have lost their jobs in this recession, a good trend isn’t good enough,” he said.

“Trends don’t buy the groceries. Trends don’t pay the rent or a college tuition. Trends don’t fulfill the need within each of us to be productive, to provide for our families, to make the most of our lives, to reach for our dreams.”

The president stressed the need for a long-term solution to America’s economic woes, arguing that his efforts were necessary to reform the US health care system, give children the best education in the world, achieve energy independence by investing in a clean energy economy, and to deal with the mounting federal debt.

He also said that in the coming days, he will be unveiling “additional ideas aimed at accelerating job growth and hiring,” but stopped short of offering specifics.

However, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said Friday that Obama could endorse the use of remaining funds of a 700-billion-dollar bailout for the financial industry to fund job creation programs.

Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi said this week that untapped Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) money could fund infrastructure investments like water projects, rapid transit, high-speed rail, and expanding Internet access and helping small businesses.

Critics of the scheme however have suggested using unspent TARP funds to pay down part of the huge US budget deficit projected by the White House to hit 1.502 trillion dollars in fiscal 2010.

According to a report to Congress in October, 317 billion dollars remains to be spent under the fund, including 70 billion repaid by financial institutions bailed out under the program.

Obama said at Thursday’s jobs summit at the White House that he was not prepared to wait to push job creation measures — but warned that government cash was limited given the size of the deficit so he called on the private sector to help.

Other possible approaches include offering small businesses a tax break to take on new workers for job-intensive energy projects.

Republicans on Friday stepped up their assault on Obama, blaming him for “job killing” policies, including his backing for a cap-and-trade system to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

House minority leader John Boehner said any decrease in the unemployment rate was “encouraging” but he warned of a “jobless recovery” and double-digit unemployment.

The Labor Department’s highly anticipated jobs report Friday showed an unexpectedly sharp improvement in the troubled labor market, key to building a sustainable recovery from the worst recession in decades.

The readings beat average analyst forecasts of 125,000 jobs lost and a jobless rate unchanged, with the job-loss number the lowest since the economy entered recession in December 2007.

The demonstration organizers called for a tough agreement on reducing emissions at the forthcoming Copenhagen summit.

The London rally was organized by the group Stop Climate Chaos, a coalition of non-governmental organizations including Oxfam and Greenpeace.

SCC director Ashok Sinha urged British Prime Minister Gordon Brown to “make Copenhagen count by committing rich countries to reduce their emissions by at least 40 percent in the next 10 years, finally putting the right sort of money on the table to help poor countries, and urgently starting the process of decarbonizing our energy supply.

“With bold leadership at home, Mr Brown can help inspire a fair, effective and binding international deal at Copenhagen.”

A spokesman for London’s Metropolitan Police told AFP the demonstration had “passed off peacefully so far”, with no reported arrests.

About 7,000 people marched in Glasgow, while another rally took place in Belfast. A protest was also planned for Dublin.

From the London rally, Britain’s Climate Change Secretary Ed Miliband told BBC television: “We’re going to go all out, the whole of the British government, over the next two weeks to make sure we get the most ambitious agreement that we can.”

He added: “We are very clear that we need a treaty within months of any agreement at Copenhagen.”

Meanwhile Oxfam chief executive Barbara Stocking said: “The UK government must fight for a comprehensive, fair and binding deal at Copenhagen.

“They must return home with a strong, effective climate deal both for our own sakes in the UK and for the millions of poor people already suffering from the effects of climate change around the world.”

Earlier, at a tie-in ecumenical service at Westminster Central Hall, Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, the leader of the world’s Anglicans, said: “We are part of a great interwoven system of life.

“Don’t please listen to those that say there is some kind of choice to be made between looking after human beings and looking after the Earth.”

Meanwhile the Archbishop of Westminster, the Most Reverend Vincent Nichols, the leader of England’s Catholics, said: “Only when we are prepared to change the way we live will politicians be able to achieve the change that we want to see.

“Live simply so others may simply live.”

It’s a state-sponsored blooper for the ages: for two months, a recording by Florida Governor Charlie Crist played when parents called KidCare to get advice on health policies for their children. Flames ripped through the Lame Horse nightclub in the Ural city of Perm as around 230 people celebrated the popular venue’s eighth anniversary, local police said, quoted by Russian news agencies.

Russian television showed bodies being piled up outside the club by rescue workers. The windows of the one-story building were shattered and charred.

Local residents told AFP the fire could have spread quickly because a barn theme meant the club was decorated with highly flammable straw panels.

Russian authorities said they had arrested the owner and manager of the club on Saturday.

Emergency Services officials in a televised meeting with President Dmitry Medvedev said managers at the venue had violated fire safety laws and repeatedly ignored orders to comply with standards.

“Warnings were issued, but they didn’t react,” Medvedev said, urging swift punishment for those responsible. “They have neither brains, nor conscience!”

Premier Vladimir Putin ordered a government commission to probe the causes of the tragedy, saying in a statement: “It is necessary to launch a minute investigation, punish the culprits and discovered the causes of this monstrous disaster.”

The death toll from the tragedy reached 109 after another seven burn victims died in hospital, a spokesman for local investigative committee said, quoted by news agencies RIA Novosti and Interfax.

Some 200 relatives of the victims waited in anguish outside a morgue on the outskirts of the city for the slow work of identifying the bodies. A regional emergency situations ministry spokeswoman told AFP so far 57 people had been identified. Related article: Families’ agonising wait

She said a further 130 people were injured in the blaze overnight from Friday to Saturday, and local residents said hospitals had put out an urgent call for blood donors in the wake of the tragedy.

Many of those killed died of smoke inhalation or were crushed to death as party-goers rushed to flee, officials said.

A local resident, who gave her name only as Nelly, said staff and performers, including a friend’s daughter, had for the most part escaped through a back door.

“The lights went out and she crawled out through a back exit. Her clothes were all charred from the fire and black,” she said.

“There were fireworks set off at the scene, and one hit the plastic ceiling, setting everything ablaze. People panicked and succumbed to burns, the crush and gas poisoning,” the Perm region’s public security minister Igor Orlov was quoted as saying.

Officials ruled out the possibility that the tragedy was due to a terrorist attack as FSB security service experts found no trace of explosives or other evidence at the scene.

The tragedy came a week after a train blast on a busy railway from Moscow to Saint Petersburg killed 26 people and renewed fears of terror attacks in Russia’s heartland.

A grainy video from inside the club broadcast on Vesti showed the ceiling starting to blaze. Smoke wisped through the crowd of young party-goers with drinks, who slowly realize what is happening and rush toward an exit.

Enforcement of fire safety regulations is known to be lax in Russia, where thousands of blazes are recorded every year and the death rate from fires is several times higher than in the West.

Perm is a city of around a million people and lies about 1,200 kilometres (700 miles) east of Moscow in Russia’s Ural mountains.

David Beckham, his wife Victoria, and the rest of their family will be enjoying a Christmas Day feast with the Ramsay’s at Beckingham Palace.

While Gordon Ramsay may be a Michelin-starred chef, he’s insisted that he won’t be the only cook in the kitchen saying:

“It’s quite a chore with one person at the helm but they’re all very good at multi-tasking and I’m very good at delegating. So there will be no lazy fingers, everybody’s going to be jumping on.

Whether it’s Victoria doing the roast or David carving the turkey or Tana making the sauce or me doing the Christmas pudding, we’ll all be helping each other. But it’s going to be mad. I’m sure it’s going to be pandemonium.”

Hopefully it won’t be anything like Hell’s Kitchen!

The party of 11 will be indulging in a late breakfast and a late lunch. Well at least 10 of them will be, Victoria will probably be pushing the food on her plate around to create the illusion that she’s eating.
